Sustainability

Sustainability at Bergbahnen Gstaad

Vision & Values

Sustainability is firmly anchored in the thoughts and actions of Bergbahnen Destination Gstaad. It encompasses ecological, economic and social responsibility along the entire value chain.

As a provider of nature and mountain experiences, an intact environment is our most important resource. Long-term planning and responsible action not only secure our future, but also economic success. In addition, the summer offer will be expanded in a targeted manner to reduce seasonal dependence on winter operations and to make capacity utilisation more sustainable.

We are committed to the protection of natural resources, to reducing emissions and consistently invest in sustainable development – for the region, for the people and for future generations.

Topics & Projects

Sustainability is evident at Bergbahnen Gstaad in a wide range of areas: energy and snow, mobility, waste, nature conservation, accessibility, educational offers and cooperation with local producers. Our projects focus on tangible impact on the environment, region and future.

Energy & Snow

Responsible use of energy is central to operating in a sensitive alpine environment. Continuous energy monitoring systematically optimises energy consumption and avoids waste.

Four individual solar panels, optimally aligned on roof surfaces contribute to the use of renewable energy sources. In addition, energy-saving devices are continuously used and resource-saving behaviour is promoted.

Mobility & CO₂ Reduction

As a public transport company, Bergbahnen Destination Gstaad actively contributes to climate-friendly mobility. All valley stations are directly connected to the public transport network, which means that both the journey and the use of the facilities are considered part of public transport.

To promote the use of sustainable means of transport, employees receive a free Half-Fare travelcard and thus discounted access to public transport. In addition, guests arriving with SBB benefit from a discounted ski day ticket – an incentive to travel to the region in an environmentally friendly manner.

Waste Management & Circular Economy

Careful use of resources is a central component of operational responsibility. All take-away products of the Berghäuser are therefore offered in sustainable packaging. To further reduce waste volumes, a separate composting plant has been installed and waste separation is systematically implemented.

For recycling, lost ski poles are collected after the winter season and processed by an external company into fondue forks and bottle openers. In addition, waste is collected along the lift routes and ski slopes in spring, either by internal teams or as part of publicly organised Clean-Up Days.

Nature and species conservation

In the planning of infrastructures, great importance is attached to environmentally friendly solutions. For example, wooden grates ensure stable parking areas and at the same time maintain soil permeability.

Bergbahnen Gstaad is also focusing on sustainable concepts in the area of greening – for example with the Alpine Herb Trail. Native plants and herbs grow there that contribute to biodiversity. The walkable path can be ideally combined with a visit to the Rinderberg Lodge.

For new construction projects, technical expert opinions are obtained in advance, such as a moor hydrological report to examine the impact on the terrain. Existing wildlife rest zones are clearly marked.

Accessibility

At numerous locations, elevators and ramps provide easy access. Cable car cabins have ground-level entrances and exits, and doors and passageways are sufficiently wide. Accessible toilet facilities are available in mountain stations and restaurants.

Clearly visible signage and information in a high contrast effect ensure better orientation. Participation in the OK:GO initiative further supports this commitment: All lanes, parking lots and catering establishments are recorded and published on the corresponding platform.

Awareness raising & nature trails

With themed trails such as the Alpine Herb Trail or the Alpine Magic Trail, Bergbahnen Gstaad promotes an understanding of alpine habitats, flora and fauna. They invite you to discover nature with mindfulness. Overarching sustainability topics such as travel by public transport, accessibility or the protection of wildlife rest areas are also conveyed visibly and are accessible on the website.

Local producers

BDG's catering businesses prefer to work with local, environmentally conscious and fair-trade suppliers. Through close cooperation with companies such as Buure Metzg or Chnusper Becke, individually tailored products are created that are regionally anchored. For example, their own recipe ideas flow directly into the production of burger buns. This partnership-based cooperation strengthens local value creation and contributes to a sustainable design of services.

Apprenticeships and training

Bergbahnen Gstaad specifically supports young people from the region. Locals are given the opportunity to complete internships or apprenticeships in various areas, such as cable car mechatronics, gastronomy, marketing or in the commercial sector. The aim is to strengthen young regional talents and train future specialists for the mountain railway industry.

Labels & Partnerships

In order to make its own sustainability standards transparent and verifiable, Bergbahnen Gstaad relies on recognised labels and partnerships. They serve as a guide and assessment of the current environment– to ensure that the direction taken is correct, that the measures are effective and that the sustainability course is continuously developed.
